Find Federal Inmate Releases

To find someone released from Federal Bureau of Prisons institutions with a Douglas County connection, first confirm that BOP custody actually existed. The federal locator can show a past release date and “RELEASED” location, but that result addresses BOP custody only. Federal supervised release, immigration custody, a state hold, or another case may continue. Pretrial U.S. Marshals Service custody follows a different record path through the court and actual housing facility.

Federal Release Paths Near Douglas

No BOP institution was identified in Douglas County. The federal system appears in the facility map because a person connected to Douglas County can enter federal custody elsewhere. BOP operates federal prisons, while the U.S. Marshals Service holds legal custody of many federal defendants before designation and uses federal, state, local, or private beds. USMS owns no jails.

Release from BOP ends BOP confinement. A federal court can still require supervised release, and another jurisdiction can take custody. A transfer from Douglas County Jail to USMS or a federal agency is not community release. The Sheriff record should identify the destination, then the federal court docket, housing facility, USMS district, or BOP locator becomes the next source.

Federal supervised release: a court-ordered period in the community after imprisonment. It is separate from BOP incarceration and appears in federal court records.

Confirm a BOP Release

Use the BOP Inmate Locator only after federal prison custody is established. Search by BOP Register, DCDC, FBI, or INS number when available. A name search can also use age, race, and sex filters, but matching identifiers remain essential.

  1. Choose the number search when a reliable federal identifier is known; otherwise enter the full name and careful filters.
  2. Compare the result’s name, register number, age, race, and sex with known facts.
  3. Read Release Date and Location together. A past date with Location “RELEASED” supports the end of BOP custody.
  4. Open the federal court docket and sentencing judgment to identify supervised-release terms or later orders.
  5. If another agency is named, continue in that agency’s system instead of describing an unrestricted community release.

A projected future BOP date can change through sentence computation, First Step Act credits, court orders, or administrative review. Do not calculate a substitute date. “UNKNOWN” can mean that confinement status is undetermined, not that the person has been released.

BOP Locator Coverage Limits

BOP says its online records generally cover federal inmates released after 1982. Older federal prison records may require the National Archives. The database can also contain people held pretrial, material witnesses, people whose charges were dismissed, or people held for civil contempt. A BOP record therefore does not prove a conviction by itself.

The locator’s released-record coverage explanation describes why dates and locations must be interpreted in context. A result belongs to the person and custody event shown, not to every similarly named person or every Douglas County case.

The official BOP locator provides the correct public search for confirmed BOP custody. It should not be replaced with the Douglas County jail app or a state corrections search.

Federal Bureau of Prisons inmate locator search

The search covers the federal population described by BOP. A Douglas County connection must be supported by the federal case, identifier, or custody trail rather than inferred from a name alone.

Federal Records and Contact

BOP’s online locator and public website are the first channels for prison custody. The responsible BOP institution, regional office, or central records process depends on the record sought. For an old post-1982 release, begin with the locator’s coverage information. For older archival material, follow BOP’s direction to the National Archives and identify the person, register number, institution if known, and date range.

Federal Custody Route

Federal prison records: BOP or National Archives
Pretrial custody: federal court and housing facility
USMS: appropriate federal district

A federal court clerk maintains docket entries, judgments, release orders, and supervision-related orders. For USMS pretrial custody, identify the court case and actual jail or detention center. There is no public USMS person locator equivalent to BOP. Do not ask the Douglas County Sheriff to certify the end of federal custody unless the Sheriff itself created the relevant local transfer record.

USMS Custody Is Different

USMS legal custody can exist while a person is physically housed in a nonfederal jail. The federal court order establishes detention or release authority, and the housing facility documents physical processing. A defendant who has not been designated and delivered to BOP may never appear in the BOP locator as a sentenced federal prisoner.

For a Douglas-connected federal defendant, start with the federal case number. Read the detention, bond, release, acquittal, dismissal, or sentencing order. Contact the housing facility to confirm its processing when needed. If the person was later designated and delivered to BOP, switch to the BOP locator. No research source establishes that Douglas County Jail currently houses USMS detainees, so that relationship must never be assumed.

Douglas Jail to Federal Custody

A Douglas County Sheriff release entry may state that county custody ended by transfer to a federal authority. That is a true release from the county jail, but it is not a community release. Ask for the destination or receiving agency field and follow the chain. If USMS is named, use the federal court and actual facility. If BOP is named after sentencing and designation, use BOP.

A person merely charged in federal court is not automatically in BOP custody. Likewise, a BOP result cannot explain a separate Douglas County arrest. The Douglas County released-inmate search separates county, state, federal, and immigration sources so unrelated no-results are not combined into a false conclusion.

After BOP Custody Ends

A BOP “RELEASED” result should be paired with the federal judgment and current docket. Supervised release is administered through the federal court and probation system, not the Illinois Prisoner Review Board or Douglas County Probation. Conditions, duration, modification, and revocation depend on the actual federal orders.

Another custody event can also follow. ICE may assume custody, a state or county may execute a hold, or a later case may change status. The locator cannot rule out these events. A precise statement says that BOP custody ended on the displayed date and separately identifies any verified next status.

Two unrelated no-results do not prove unrestricted release. A missing BOP match and absence from the Douglas jail population answer different database questions.

Federal Date and Record Checks

Save the query type, access date, matched identifiers, exact Release Date, and exact Location wording. For a projected date, verify with BOP rather than treating a screenshot as fixed. Sentence computations may change after credit calculations or court action.

For an older record, use durable sources: the judgment, docket, BOP records request, and National Archives where applicable. Court records may explain conviction and supervised release, while the BOP entry documents federal prison custody. Each source answers a distinct part of the custody history.

About BOP Institutions

Federal Bureau of Prisons institutions form a nationwide federal prison system. No BOP facility was found physically in Douglas County during the official local sweep. The entry is a conditional custody path, not a claim that Douglas County operates or hosts a federal prison.

Institution location may change through federal transfers. Use the locator’s current facility information for active custody and the released result for past custody. Facility-specific visitation, mail, and release processing should be confirmed with the institution shown, not borrowed from Douglas County Jail rules.

Immigration Custody After BOP

If records show that ICE assumed custody after BOP release, move to the ICE detention / Enforcement and Removal Operations path. A federal prison release and ICE detention can occur in sequence without contradiction. The BOP record proves only that the BOP part ended.

ICE’s public locator has a short post-release window and different identifiers. Immigration court status is separately controlled by EOIR records. Keeping those systems apart prevents a prison release date from being mistaken for the end of an immigration case.
